Lappajärvi, South Ostrobothnia

Hotel Kivitippu

A base camp on the shore of a meteor lake.

Hotel Kivitippu stands on the shore of Lappajärvi, one of Europe's largest meteor-crater lakes.

The lake formed some 78 million years ago in a meteor impact, and the whole region belongs to the UNESCO Global Geopark network. The hotel looks straight out over the water, with the shore, forest trails and the golf course all a few steps away.

Summer brings golf, paddling, fishing and hiking; winter brings ice-swimming and quiet. When the day is done, the base camp is warm: a restaurant, a sauna, and your own room by the lake.
